Adoption Process

Adoption Events (Adopt-A-Pet)

Richardson Humane Society hold weekly Adopt-A-Pet events, every Saturday, at pet stores in the Richardson area. In addition to our weekly adoption events, we occasionally hold additional special events at other times.

Our two primary adoption locations are PETCO (1401 E. Spring Valley Road in Richardson) and PETsMART (16821 N. Coit Road, Dallas), alternating between these two locations. PETCO hours are normally 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. PETsMART hours are normally 1 p.m. through 4 p.m. For exact details and locations of our adoption events, please see our events page.

Our Adopt-A-Pet (AAP) events are a great time for you to meet the pet that you are interested in. Most pets listed as available on our main pets page will be at our adoption events, however, we cannot guarantee that the pet you are interested in will be at a given event.

Application

Our application forms are available for you to fill out at our Adopt-A-Pet events, however, to speed things up you may wish to fill in an application form before hand and send it to us by email. Please bring a copy with you as well, in case we can't find the copy you sent.

Please note that Richardson Humane Society can only adopt pets to families within the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Adoption Process

When visitors arrive at AAP, they are asked to:

Ask for an application and completely fill it out. If you previously submitted the adoption application, ask that it be retrieved from our files.

Sign the Sign-In Sheet. The next available counselor will review your application with you and answer your questions. You will have an opportunity to visit with the pet if it is there that day.

Some pets will have multiple adoption applicants, and all applications are reviewed at the end of the event to determine the best match for each pet. When an application is selected for the next phase (home visit), contact is made by the next day (normally by noon). If you are not contacted regarding the pet you have selected, please continue to check our website for other adoptable pets. So many are in need.

Please keep an open mind and an open heart. We know you care! Don't despair if the pet you wanted is already adopted or better suited to another home. Pets are matched with the home best suited to the animal to ensure both adopter and pet have a lasting relationship! Your application will be kept on file for 3 months so another suitable pet might be found. Keep checking for new pet listings for one that may be a good match for you.

Please remember that EVERY RHS ADOPTION SAVES TWO LIVES: The adopted pet will have a safe, caring permanent home, and another space becomes available in a foster home to rescue a homeless pet from needless euthanasia or pain and suffering from exposure, human abuse and neglect, disease, or starvation.

Adoption Fee

Our adoption fee is $150 for dogs and $100 for cats. Discounts are available for adopters of our senior pets. Your adoption fee helps defray veterinary expenses while your pet was in our care. Your pet will be neutered, microchipped, current on shots, heartworm tested and treated if necessary; and started on heartworm preventative. Adoption fees are payable in cash or by check to RHS.

Adoption Criteria

RHS places its rescued pets in homes in which all current pets are spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations and heartworm preventative, and kept primarily indoors (cats 100% indoors) as part of the family.

All adopters must be at least 21 years old.

RHS verifies veterinary records on all current pets and on all pets owned in the past 5 years, and requires proof of landlord pet deposits (and/or documentation that pets are allowed on rental property) before the application is considered complete.

Upon receipt of the complete application, applicants are interviewed by an adoption counselor at our Adopt a Pet (AAP) events.

RHS conducts a home visit prior to all adoptions.

Because our application-review process includes a home visit by our volunteers, we place our foster pets within a 50-mile radius of Richardson, Texas. We appreciate your understanding and hope that, if you live outside our service area, you will consider adopting a pet from a rescue group or shelter in your area.
